Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy (PN)  is a degenerative disorder of the nerves (usually of the hands and feet).  . One of the most common causes is diabetes.   Other causes include traumatic injuries, infections (neuritis), metabolic problems and exposure to toxins, but frequently, the cause of neuropathy cannot be identified. PN Peripheral neuropathy often causes symptoms of numbness and pain described as burning or tingling. Physicians use a number of medications to reduce the painful symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Some cases progress and are resistant to medical therapy, making it difficult to manage symptoms. There is hope that mesenchymal signaling cells will mitigate some of the degenerative effects of neuropathy.

How can cell therapy improve the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy?

Mesenchymal signaling cells (MSCs)  from umbilical cord produce:

  • Proteins that support the growth and survival of neurons
  • Angiogenic factors that are essential for the healing, growth, development, and maintenance of blood vessels
  • Immunomodulatory substances that kick up your own immune system which then can reverse the damage to the nerves.

In 2015, researchers published the results of a study using umbilical cord cells to treat patients with diabetic foot gangrene due to peripheral neuropathy.  Results showed procedures with MSC cells were safe.  Patients had reduced pain in the limb, cold sensation was reduced, and clinical symptoms were improved. The ulcers healed gradually and the patient’s quality of life improved.

This is a new technology that can be used to treat the diabetic feet and legs as with arms and is a well-studied topic in the field of angiogenesis.

MSCs have high proliferative and self-renewal capabilities that help many types of cells including damaged nerve cells that cause Neuropathy.

Treatments may include:

  • Mesenchymal cells derived from human umbilical cord blood
  • Antioxidant therapy with vitamin C and glutathione
  • Platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP)
  • Regeneration-Repair- Restore
  • In short restorative medicine deals with natural ways to heal our bodies, including neuropathy.
